Next Culpeper Seminar Series with Professor Francis G. Lu on “Cultural Issues: From DSM-IV to DSM-5”

Please join us for the next Culpeper Seminar Series lecture, which is on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 from 3:30 – 5:00 pm, in Laurel Heights Conference Room 474. Francis G. Lu, MD, Luke & Grace Kim Professor in Cultural Psychiatry, Emeritus, University of California, Davis, will give a seminar titled “Cultural Issues: From DSM-IV to DSM-5” Educational objectives: 1. Describe cultural issues as discussed in DSM-5 in Sections 1, 2, and 3. 2. Define the 5 parts of the DSM-5 Outline for Cultural Formulation and trace the changes since DSM-IV. 3. Describe the 16 questions in the Cultural Formulation Interview. 4. Understand the 3 main types of the cultural concepts of distress Professor Lu's career has focused on cultural competence and diversity, mental health disparities, psychiatric education with an emphasis on recruitment and mentorship, and the interface of psychiatry and religion/spirituality especially through film. He has served on the California State Department of Mental Health Cultural Competence Advisory Committee since 1996. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) awarded him the 2001 Kun-Po Soo Award for his work in integrating Asian issues into psychiatry; in 2002, he received a Special APA Presidential Commendation for his work in cross-cultural psychiatry. In 2008, the American Psychiatric Foundation awarded him one of its Advancing Minority Mental Health Awards and the Association for Academic Psychiatry honored him with its Lifetime Achievement in Education Award. He currently serves as an issues representative on the National Steering Committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Diversity and Inclusion and as chair of the University of California Committee on Affirmative Action and Diversity of the Academic Senate.
