"More than Pushing Pills: Black AIDS Activism in the Bay Area, 1981-1996"
This talk explores ways in which African Americans understood and confronted their vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in the San Francisco Bay Area, which was one of the first epicenters of the epidemic. In many ways, Black AIDS activists' tactics conflicted with local public health measures that emphasized safe sex and abstinence while leaving racism and patriarchy unchecked. As such, Black activists adapted, abandoned, and challenged forms of the heralded "San Francisco Model of Care" to attend to the needs of marginalized groups such as--but not limited to--sex workers, queer and trans folks, and drug users, thus offering new perspectives to local AIDS narratives.
